
This study investigated the impact of circadian misalignment on chronic shift workers' energy balance regulation and obesity risk. Seven healthy night shift workers underwent two 3-day protocols: one with circadian misalignment and another with alignment. The results showed that circadian misalignment led to a 17% increase in 24-hour acylated ghrelin levels and a 14% higher hunger at breakfast. Surprisingly, activity levels increased by 38% during misalignment despite increased sleepiness. The findings suggest that circadian misalignment may contribute to the increased obesity risk observed in chronic shift workers and warrant further research on its long-term effects.
