Key Bacterial Mechanism in OSCC Progression Identified

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) progression is linked to the virulence of periodontal pathogens. Proteomics of OSCC secretomes revealed upregulated host proteins related to LPS response, cell migration, and amino acid metabolism, while the complement cascade was downregulated. Microbiome analysis identified Fusobacterium nucleatum as a key pathogen, utilizing L-glutamate from cancer cells as an energy source via the L-glutamate degradation pathway. This bacterium modulated OSCC cells by enhancing SLC7A11 expression, promoting glutamate efflux, tumor growth, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition.
