
Olfactory dysfunction (OD) in acute COVID-19 has been linked to localized inflammation, but the mechanisms behind persistent OD are poorly understood. A prospective study examined olfactory cleft (OC) biomarkers as potential predictors of persistent OD in mucus samples. The study compared COVID-19 patients with persistent OD (>3 months) to those without OD and non-COVID controls. The results showed elevated levels of IFN-λ1 and IFN-γ in COVID-19 persistent OD cases, suggesting a potential role for the IFN pathway in understanding and addressing persistent OD.
