A 21-year-old female presents with the following laboratory values: hemoglobin 9gm%, MCV 55%, and RBC count 4.5 million/mm3. There is no history of blood transfusion. He was diagnosed with Thalassemia Minor and not with iron deficiency anemia. Could you explain the rationale behind the diagnosis?

Dr. Deepak
Mentzer index i.e MCV/RBC should be less than 13%in thalassemia whereas it is greater than 13% in iron deficiency anemia
