A 60-year-old male with a known case of type 2 diabetes mellitus for the past 15 years presents to the emergency department with complaints of fever and severe midline neck pain for the last week. On examination, the patient appears ill and is febrile with a temperature of 101°F (38.3°C). He reports localized tenderness and rigidity in the cervical spine area, particularly at the C5-C6 level.
