37-year-old woman is noted to have a 3.2-cm right thyroid nodule. Family history is negative for thyroid cancer. On physical examination, her blood pressure is 118/78 mm Hg and pulse rate is 80 beats/min. She has no palpable lymph nodes in the neck.
Findings on FNAC are suggestive of medullary thyroid cancer.
Laboratory test results:
Serum calcitonin = 420 pg/mL (<8 pg/mL) , Serum calcium = 8.9 mg/dL (8.2-10.2 mg/dL) ,
PTH = 33 pg/mL (10-65 pg/mL), Plasma metanephrines, normal
