NAFLD prevalence is high in conditions such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. While the general population has a 20% NAFLD prevalence, in obese populations, it may affect up to 75%. Morbidly obese individuals commonly exhibit steatosis, and NASH is present in 25–70%. The prevalence of NAFLD in type 2 diabetes ranges from 50 to 75%, with elevated alanine aminotransferase levels predicting future diabetes development. As obesity rates rise, the prevalence of NAFLD and NASH is expected to increase, and alarming observations of NASH in youth parallel the obesity surge.
