Stargardt macular dystrophy (STGD1) is a prevalent form of macular dystrophy with three distinct presentations: childhood onset, adulthood onset, and late onset. Earlier onset is associated with a more unfavorable prognosis. The condition is characterized by variable macular atrophy and yellow-white flecks at the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) level. The global prevalence of STGD1 is approximately 1 per 6578 individuals. Given its progressive nature and early onset, patients often experience long-term health-related financial, emotional, and psychological challenges.
