A 45-year-old woman who had previously been in good health arrived at the emergency room complaining of sudden pain in her right hand's fifth finger. Then, in addition to that finger, the right thumb and thenar eminence also developed bruises (figure). Oedema and discolouration were present in addition to this. A subcutaneous haemorrhage and oedema were discovered during a physical examination, and the capillary refill was standard. All other laboratory test findings, including C-reactive protein and autoantibody screening, were normal, and there was no evidence of platelet shortage or coagulopathy. The patient's condition improved five days later without any medical intervention.
