ZERO to HERO! Cardiac Survivor @ Baroda! A cardiac arrest survivor with COMA and PICA Syndrome wakes up, walks, talks, and goes home against all odds! Having a patient with cardiac arrest and sudden cardiac standstill with circulatory arrest is always a nightmare. Some time ago, I encountered a patient who arrived with a heart rate of zero. He was brought in within 6-8 minutes of deterioration at home and was subjected to CPR with which he revived, his heart started beating, and he was shifted to the ICU and then the Cath Lab. He underwent Coronary Angiography and needed PTCA & a stent for his tight LAD block with DM,HT,Hyperlipidemia as comorbidities. Although he improved, he required ventilator support due to coma caused by circulatory arrest, which impaired blood flow to his brain. Neuro advised to discontinue venti support but he was shifted to another hospital where he remained in a coma for a few days but gradually started to recover. Within 10 days, he no longer needed ventilator support and was discharged after about 20 days. He came to Pooja Clinic for follow-up, walking and talking, and expressed his gratitude for the excellent care he received. Being involved in the care of such a patient, along with supportive relatives, interventional cardiologists, intensivists, and neurophysicians, was indeed a rewarding experience.
