Constipation means infrequent, hard or difficult stools. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes recurring abdominal pain with constipation, diarrhoea or both. Diet, fluids, activity and medicines help most people; persistent changes in bowel habits should be checked.
A general physician can treat most cases. A gastroenterologist is advised for long-standing problems or warning signs.
