High cholesterol means too much 'bad' (LDL) cholesterol or triglycerides in the blood. It usually has no symptoms but builds up in arteries over time and raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. A lipid profile blood test detects it, and diet, exercise and medicines can bring it down.
A general physician can treat most cases. A cardiologist is advised if you have heart disease, very high levels or a strong family history.
A lipid profile blood test measures total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides. Your doctor will tell you whether fasting is needed.
Diet, exercise and weight loss can lower cholesterol, but many people also need medicines such as statins, especially if their heart risk is high.
