A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection of the bladder or kidneys. It is more common in women. UTIs are treated with antibiotics after a urine test; repeated infections need further evaluation.
A general physician can treat simple UTIs. A urologist is advised for repeated infections, and a gynaecologist during pregnancy.
A urine routine test and a urine culture, which identifies the bacteria and the right antibiotic.
Mild cases sometimes settle, but untreated UTIs can spread to the kidneys. See a doctor rather than self-medicating.
