IDA in a teen

An 18-year-old female patient presented with complaints of easy fatigability and breathlessness. On examination, pallor was observed. The complete blood count (CBC) findings revealed significant abnormalities. The white blood cell (WBC) count was 4.8x10^3/µl, within the normal range of 4.0-10.0x10^3/µl. However, the red blood cell (RBC) count was notably low at 2.8x10^6/µl, which falls below the normal range of 3.8-4.8x10^6/µl. The hemoglobin (Hb) level was also decreased at 7.4 gm/dl, compared to the normal range of 11.0-15.0 gm/dl. The hematocrit (Hct) value was 21%, significantly lower than the normal range of 36-46%. Furthermore, the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) was 62 fl, below the normal range of 83-101 fl. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) was 20.8 pg, lower than the normal range of 27-32 pg. The mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) was 24.6 gm/dl, lower than the normal range of 31.5-34.5 gm/dl. The red cell distribution width-coefficient of variation (RDW-CV) was elevated at 18.2%, exceeding the normal range of 11.6-14.0%. Platelet count was within the normal range at 219x10^3/µl, falling between 150-400x10^3/µl.
