A 15-year follow-up study on diabetic retinopathy (DR) among an Indian cohort with Type 2 diabetes reveals an incidence rate of 5% for any DR, with sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) observed in 1.10% and 0.48% of cases, respectively. DR progression included 7.5% one-step and 1.75% two-step advances, while minimal regression was observed. Key risk factors for DR incidence and progression were baseline diabetes duration, systolic blood pressure, HbA1c levels, anemia, and smoking. The study underscores the impact of long-term risk factors on DR outcomes, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions in high-risk groups.
