The Bucharest Early Intervention Project conducted a randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of foster care compared to institutional care. Over a span of nearly 20 years, data from assessments of 136 children in Bucharest, Romania, were analyzed to determine the overall effect of the foster care intervention on children's outcomes. The study found that children placed in foster care had better cognitive and physical outcomes and exhibited fewer severe symptoms of psychopathology compared to those in institutional care. The positive effects of foster care remained consistent across the developmental stages, with the greatest impact observed in IQ and attachment/social relatedness disorders. These findings highlight the importance of placing young children in families after institutional care.
