
Childhood metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a growing public health concern. A new study investigated the role of bile acid (BA) levels and gut microbiota in MetS development. The research involved 100 children aged 10 to 12, with 42 having MetS. Higher levels of total, secondary, and 12α-hydroxylated BAs, including deoxycholic acid, were observed in children with MetS, correlating with dyslipidemia and insulin resistance markers. Notably, these altered BA levels were associated with reduced gut bacterial diversity and negatively impacted genera known for their potential health benefits. The findings suggest a connection between dysregulated BAs, gut microbiota, and childhood MetS.
