A high-salt diet promotes atherosclerosis by altering haematopoiesis

Excessive salt intake is commonly associated with hypertension and cardiovascular disease. However, this study proposed that it can also promote cardiovascular and other diseases independently of high blood pressure. This occurs through inflammatory pathways that increase the production of myeloid cells. While the link between a high-salt diet and cardiovascular disease has traditionally been attributed to hypertension, not all individuals are sensitive to salt intake regarding blood pressure. Therefore, it is important to explore alternative mechanisms by which a high-salt diet contributes to cardiovascular disease. Understanding these mechanisms could have significant clinical implications.
