The study investigates the effect of exposing living oral bacteria to dead siblings killed by heat or hydrogen peroxide. Results showed different responses depending on the mode of killing, culture media, and density of dead cells. Multispecies oral biofilms also responded differently to the supplementation of dead cells during development, with matured biofilms being more resilient. The study suggests that dead bacteria resulting from antiseptics use may cause imbalances in nutrient availability in the oral cavity and result in ecological changes or new bacterial phenotypes.
