The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended a combination of dapsone, rifampin, and clofazimine known as multidrug therapy (MDT) in 1982 to cure Mycobacterium leprae infection. This regimen resulted in a significant decrease in global leprosy prevalence, further aided by the removal of cured patients from registries. Encouraged by this progress, the WHO launched a global campaign from 1990 to 2000 to eliminate leprosy as a public health issue by using MDT. The objective was to interrupt transmission by treating new cases.

An umbrella review of 69 systematic reviews covering 970 studies and 221 factors identified six factors with convincing evidence of association with psychotic disorders.
