A prospective evaluation of neck and shoulder function following treatments of early‐stage human papillomavirus‐associated oropharynx cancer

The study aimed to compare the neck and shoulder function after treatment in patients with human papillomavirus-associated oropharynx squamous cell carcinoma (HPV+OPSCC). It was a prospective study conducted at a tertiary care center. The Neck Dissection Impairment Index (NDII) was used to assess neck and shoulder function before treatment, at 3 months, and 1 year after treatment. The study included 106 treatment-naïve patients who underwent surgery alone, surgery with adjuvant radiation, or definitive radiation. Patients who received surgery alone and surgery with adjuvant radiation reported worsened function at 3 months post-treatment, but their function improved and returned to pre-treatment levels at 1 year. Patients who received definitive radiation reported worsened function only in specific domains at 3 months but had no differences at 1 year. Overall, patients with HPV+OPSCC may experience mild shoulder and neck dysfunction at 3 months after treatment, but it typically resolves in 1 year, regardless of the treatment modality used.
