A randomized controlled trial investigating rectus sheath catheters following radical cystectomy

This study evaluated whether rectus sheath catheters (RSC) could serve as an alternative to thoracic epidural (TE) for postoperative pain relief following radical cystectomy (RC). The study found that RSC was non-inferior to TE in terms of opioid consumption, with a median opioid morphine equivalent (OME) of 103mg in the TE group and 161.75mg in the RSC group. Although the TE group initially had better pain scores during the post-anaesthesia care unit stay, this advantage was lost after the first postoperative day. Both groups had similar patient satisfaction with analgesia on the third postoperative day. The study concluded that RSC is a viable alternative to TE for postoperative pain control in RC patients.
