A Rapid Systematic Review of Pharmacologic Sleep Promotion Modalities in the Intensive Care Unit

The study assess the evidence supporting the use of pharmacologic interventions for sleep improvement in the intensive care unit (ICU). A rapid systematic review was conducted, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and before-and-after cohort studies. Sixteen studies involving 2573 patients were analyzed, with dexmedetomidine and melatonin agonists being the most commonly studied interventions. However, the evidence does not currently support routine administration of these medications for sleep improvement in the ICU. The study recommends future research to consider patient characteristics, non-pharmacologic sleep protocols, and the impact on circadian rhythm and delirium.
