A Retrospective Analysis of the Impact of Early vs Late Intubation on ICU Mortality in COVID-19 Patients

The optimal timing for intubating COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) is not well established. Non-invasive respiratory support before intubation may lead to patient-induced lung injury and worsen outcomes. This study analyzed data from 4,198 COVID-19 patients with ARF from 73 ICUs to determine whether early intubation (within 24 hours of ICU admission) was associated with lower mortality than late intubation. Mortality was higher in the late intubation group (37%) than in the early intubation group (32%). Early intubation was found to be an independent protective factor for mortality.
