
A study reveals that in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), the smallest airways, terminal bronchioles, suffer significant tissue damage even in mild cases. Terminal bronchioles shrink by up to 41% before a mild COPD diagnosis. The study created a single-cell atlas to understand these structural changes. They analyzed 262 lung samples from individuals with different COPD stages. Findings show that elastin fiber loss within alveolar attachments causes the narrowing of bronchiole lumens, occurring before emphysematous tissue damage. Macrophages and neutrophils play a role in this process, along with adaptive immune cells. This atlas highlights terminal bronchioles as a potential target for COPD treatment.
