Accuracy of Intraoral Scanner for Recording Completely Edentulous Arches

The study focuses on evaluating the accuracy of intraoral scanners in scanning edentulous arches for complete denture fabrication. Out of 334 articles identified through searches in medical databases, twelve were included, comprising both clinical and in vitro studies. Using the QUADAS-2 tool for quality analysis, the study found varying accuracy values among different intraoral scanners. Discrepancies were prominent in regions such as peripheral borders, the inner seal, and less distinct structures like the soft palate. While scanners proved effective in capturing clear anatomic landmarks, they exhibited higher discrepancies in mobile and poorly traceable areas. Consequently, the study recommends cautious interpretation of peripheral borders and soft palate when using intraoral scanners for digitizing denture-bearing areas.
