
A study explores ACE2, the receptor involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection, in oral mucosal cells. The study found ACE2's presence in oral keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Transfected nucleotides and pro-inflammatory cytokines increased ACE2 expression in these cells. Additionally, viral spike S1 protein amplified CXCL10 expression when combined with ACE2, promoting immune responses. ACE2 knockdown reduced cytokine and S1 protein-mediated CXCL10 levels. The study suggests ACE2 in oral mucosal cells might contribute to infection and inflammation during SARS-CoV-2 invasion.
