Active Vitamin D Use and Fractures in Hemodialysis Patients

A study involving 41,677 in-center hemodialysis patients examined active vitamin D's effects on bone health. The study found that active vitamin D did not independently enhance bone strength or reduce the risk of fractures, including hip fractures. Even after adjusting for parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, this conclusion supports current KDIGO guidelines recommending active vitamin D primarily for patients with elevated or increasing PTH.
