In a study examining multi-component periodontal treatments' impact on individuals with periodontitis and diabetes, age differences were explored. The study analyzed data from 115 trials involving participants aged 18 and older. The study found that these treatments significantly reduced probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). However, the effectiveness decreased with age, particularly for PD and CAL. Older participants (55+) experienced a smaller effect size for HbA1c compared to younger individuals. The findings emphasize the need for early intervention and tailored treatment strategies, with more aggressive approaches possibly required for older patients to achieve optimal results.
