Exposure to high air pollution is linked to increased use of mental health services among people with dementia, suggests a long-term study in Washington DC. Reducing nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter levels may alleviate strain on mental health services. With an estimated 50,000 individuals living with dementia in the UK, projected to reach 2 million by 2050, this pollution-related demand is significant. High air pollution correlated with greater mental health service use, particularly for vascular dementia. Reducing pollutants according to WHO guidelines could reduce contacts by 13-38%, aiding dementia care and service efficiency.
