The World Health Organization declares COVID-19 is no longer a global threat, but the United States sees a surge in cases of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a significant increase in HMPV cases, with nearly 11% of tested specimens positive at its peak in mid-March. Unlike COVID-19 and the flu, there are no vaccines or antiviral drugs available for HMPV. The virus typically causes mild symptoms resembling a cold, but severe infection can occur in individuals with respiratory conditions and primarily affects children under 5 years old, but can impact people of all ages. Prevention measures include handwashing, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.
