Almost 50,000 excess deaths estimated globally due to disrupted routine vaccinations

A study published in The Lancet Global Health journal estimates nearly 50,000 additional deaths globally between 2020 and 2030 due to pandemic-related disruptions in immunization programs. Over 30,000 deaths are predicted in Africa and around 13,000 in Southeast Asia, primarily due to measles vaccine coverage disruptions. The study underscores the need for catch-up activities to avert excess deaths. The Vaccine Impact Modelling Consortium highlights the importance of timely interventions and continued global efforts to address affected vaccine cohorts and increase healthcare resilience.
