A study assessed the effects of alpha lipoic acid (ALA) on hormonal and metabolic parameters in overweight/obese Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) patients. Thirty-two patients received ALA (400 mg/day) for 12 weeks. ALA significantly improved insulin sensitivity, decreased liver enzyme levels, and enhanced hepatic insulin extraction, with greater effects observed in PCOS patients with familial diabetes history. Reproductive hormones remained unchanged. ALA's benefits suggest potential reductions in the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and diabetes in PCOS patients, particularly those with familial diabetes predisposition.
