A study has found that alveolar fibroproliferative response (FPR), a critical factor in developing pulmonary fibrosis, is associated with higher mortality in COVID-19-ARDS patients. The researchers found that a longitudinal increase in the N-terminal-peptide of procollagen III (NT-PCP-III), a validated biomarker for activated FPR, was associated with increased mortality. These findings suggest that alveolar FPR during hospitalization may be a useful prognostic marker in COVID-19-ARDS patients. However, further research is needed to determine the long-term consequences of alveolar FPR in survivors.
