The American Thoracic Society (ATS) promotes the use of race and ethnicity-specific reference equations for pulmonary function tests (PFTs), but there are concerns that this contributes to false views of fixed differences between races and may mask the effects of differential exposures, which can contribute to health disparities. A workshop was convened in 2021 to evaluate the use of race and ethnicity in PFT interpretation, and the conclusion was to replace race and ethnicity-specific equations with race-neutral average reference equations. However, there are uncertainties and potential harms associated with this change, and it is recommended to engage key stakeholders, continue research and education, and identify modifiable risk factors for reduced pulmonary function.
