The study investigated the evolution of diagnoses and procedures related to upper urinary tract (UUT) stones in Germany, France, and England over the decade before the COVID-19 pandemic. The study analyzed International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) codes related to UUT stones diagnosis and extracted procedure volumes for Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL), Ureteroscopy (URS), Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), and Open Surgery (OS). The results showed increased stone diagnoses and procedures with a shift in surgical management from ESWL to URS. The study highlights the increasing burden on patients and healthcare providers due to rising UUT stone prevalence in Europe.
