Analysis of Umbilical and Portal Blood-Flow Volumes in Fetuses Born Small-for-Gestational Age

The study analyzed the changes in afferent venous flow volume to the liver in fetuses born small-for-gestational age. It compared low-risk singleton pregnancies with estimated fetal and birth weights below the 10th centile with a control group of fetuses born adequate-for-gestational age. The study found that in fetuses born small-for-gestational age, the ratio of blood-flow volume in the umbilical vein to that in the portal vein decreased to a greater extent during pregnancy and reached a lower nadir in the third trimester compared with fetuses born adequate-for-gestational age.
