Antibiotic Selection for CF Pulmonary Exacerbations Informed by Microbiology

Results from a study of 156 pediatric CF-related pulmonary exacerbation (PEx) hospitalizations showed that microbiological history significantly influenced empiric antibiotic selection. Common organisms targeted were Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Antibiotics were effective against the organisms isolated in 78.2% of encounters. While there was variability in targeting organisms based on historical growth patterns, expanding coverage to include organisms from over a year ago did not improve coverage effectiveness. This highlights the importance of patient-specific microbiology in guiding initial antibiotic treatment for CF-related PEx.
