A new study reveals that the combined use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antibiotics significantly increases the risk of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). Compared to controls, the joint effect of recent PPIs and antibiotics showed a stronger association with CDI risk. Dose-response analysis indicated a correlation between increased exposure and higher CDI risk. Certain antibiotic classes, especially macrolides/lincosamides/streptogramins, showed a pronounced association with CDI risk and recurrence. The study concludes that both recent and less recent use of PPIs and antibiotics, especially in combination, heightens the risk of CDI.
