In a recent study focusing on critically ill patients with delirium, researchers evaluated the production of inflammatory cytokines, delirium progression, and the impact of antipsychotics. The study included 23 adult patients with confirmed delirium, and IL-6 and IL-8 levels were monitored over 24 hours. Results showed no significant differences in cytokine levels between patients receiving antipsychotics and those who did not. Two patient clusters were identified, with Cluster 1 showing more co-inflammatory conditions but fewer delirium-free days than Cluster 2. The study suggests antipsychotics did not improve delirium or inflammatory markers in critically ill patients.
