A 37-year-old woman who lost her upper jaw to a life-threatening black fungus infection (mucormycosis) has had it successfully reconstructed using a 3D printed implant at the Indian Army's Command Hospital in Lucknow. Initially referred from the Air Force Hospital, Gorakhpur, in June 2021, a team of medical experts, including ENT and Maxillofacial surgeons, removed a portion of her upper jaw, leading to a significant defect. After obtaining financial approval, a 3D printed titanium implant was crafted based on a virtual 3D model of her jaw. The surgery took place on August 9, providing a permanent solution.

The paste maintained about 75% metabolic activity and better preserved cell viability, supporting further investigation as a medicament for regenerative endodontic procedures.

As a single-arm study, the findings are descriptive and require controlled confirmation.
