
Higher arterial calcification in the heart–brain axis was associated with worse baseline cognitive performance and faster cognitive decline, as shown in a population-based analysis of 2,368 participants from the Rotterdam Study. Arterial calcification, quantified through non-contrast CT, demonstrated significant effects on cognition, particularly for the intracranial carotid artery (β per 10-percentile increase: −0.01, 95% CI: −0.03, −0.00; p ≤ 0.001). Findings highlight vascular damage as a key contributor to cognitive decline.
