Arterial spin labeling (ASL-MRI) versus fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) in diagnosing dementia

Arterial spin labeling (ASL-MRI) versus fluorodeoxyglucose-PET (FDG-PET) in diagnosing dementia

A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing dementia diagnostic methods reveals FDG-PET's superiority over ASL-MRI. Dementia, caused by neurodegenerative diseases, hampers higher brain functions. FDG-PET is a common diagnostic tool, but its cost and accessibility prompt exploration of alternatives like ASL-MRI. In the study encompassing 14 research works, nine indicated overlap between FDG-PET and ASL-MRI results, while five favored FDG-PET. Meta-analysis confirmed FDG-PET's higher sensitivity. Technical disparities, notably ASL-MRI's lower temporal resolution, may explain this. Similar specificity was noted, and some cases showed mixed results. The findings highlight FDG-PET's diagnostic edge, urging further research on ASL-MRI's efficacy.
