
A study of over 9,000 postmenopausal women from the UK-Biobank, investigated the relationship between lifetime hormone exposure (LHE) and cerebral small vessel disease. The cohort, aged 40–69, underwent brain MRI scans between 2014 and 2021. Endogenous LHE (LHEEndo) was calculated by summing pregnancy years and reproductive period duration, while exogenous LHE (LHEExo) included years on oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy. Results showed that higher LHEEndo correlated with smaller white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV), emphasizing the protective role of endogenous hormones in postmenopausal cerebrovascular health.
