The study investigated the relationship between the Muscle Quality Index (MQI) and periodontitis in American adults aged 30 and above. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011–2014, the study finds a J-shaped correlation between MQI and periodontitis, indicating a change point at 3.64. MQIArm, MQIApp, and MQItotal show negative associations with periodontitis, with MQItotal demonstrating an odds ratio of 0.69 before the change point. Additionally, alcohol consumption is identified as a mediator in the relationship between MQI and periodontitis, explaining 0.4% of the effect. This suggests MQI independently correlates with periodontitis, with alcohol playing a mediating role.
