Association of Central Retinal Arteriolar and Venular Equivalents with Brain-aging and Macular Ganglion Cell-inner Plexiform Layer Thickness

This study examines the relationship between retinal vessel measurements (central retinal arteriolar and venular equivalents), brain aging, and neurodegeneration, as assessed by macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness. The study was conducted among 2381 participants of the Beaver Dam Offspring Study, with a mean age of 53.9 years, followed up every 5 years. Results showed that wider central retinal arteriolar equivalents were associated with decreased 5-year brain aging risk, and both vessel measures were related to macular ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer thickness. The findings suggest that retinal vessel measurements may be useful in identifying individuals at higher risk of cognitive decline and neurodegeneration.
