The study aimed to compare the prevalence and load of nine pathobionts in subgingival samples of healthy individuals and periodontitis patients from four different countries. The prevalence and load of the species were measured by quantitative PCR. The study confirmed the association of all species, except for T. socranskii, with periodontitis in all countries except Peru. The study suggests that F. alocis, P. endodontalis, P. gingivalis, T. denticola, and T. forsythia may be disease biomarkers in Belgium, Chile, and Spain due to their higher abundance in periodontitis patients.
