This study conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective, observational study to investigate the impact of noninvasive respiratory support (high-flow nasal cannula - HFNC or noninvasive positive pressure ventilation - NIPPV) on the reintubation risk in patients with acute brain injury (ABI) who were being weaned off mechanical ventilation. The study included 1,115 patients from 62 hospitals and 19 countries, with 23.9% receiving HFNC or NIPPV following extubation. The findings showed that neither prophylactic HFNC nor NIPPV reduced reintubation odds compared to conventional oxygen therapy. Further prospective trials are needed to confirm treatment effects in this specific patient population.
