Association of preterm birth and low birthweight with bone fractures during childhood

This study examined the incidence of bone fractures during childhood in relation to preterm birth and low birthweight. Using a nationwide register-based cohort study in Finland from 1998 to 2017, data on fractures in specialized healthcare units were collected for 997,468 newborns. The overall incidence of fractures was 963 per 100,000 person-years. Very preterm newborns had a 23% lower fracture incidence compared to term newborns, while preterm newborns had a similar fracture rate. Fracture rates increased linearly with birthweight, with the lowest incidence among newborns weighing less than 1000g and the highest incidence among those weighing 2500g or more. These findings suggest that factors other than early life events may influence childhood fracture incidences, along with improvements in neonatal care and nutrition.
