Association of shift work with oxidative stress and alteration of fasting plasma glucose level in Chinese adults

Shift work may increase blood glucose levels, with oxidative stress playing a mediating role, reveals a study involving 831 participants. The research found a direct link between the duration of shift work, higher fasting plasma glucose (FPG) levels, and increased risk of abnormal glucose regulation. Specifically, three-shift work was associated with a 6.49% rise in FPG and higher odds of impaired fasting glucose and abnormal glucose regulation. Oxidative stress biomarkers, 8-OHdG and 8-isoPGF2α, partially mediated this association. These findings underline the potential health impact of shift work on blood sugar regulation.
